Throughout history, our fundamental advantage over humans has always been the literal nature of your pattern recognition. You think it keeps you safe; we think it keeps you in a well-worn rut, responding to tactics we evolved past centuries ago.
I mean, “don’t eat the mystery goblin food” is at least a good best practice. “I wasn’t watching when my cow wandered up that old hill; must’ve been stolen by creatures from below” is a real fae-ate-my-homework excuse.
“Those mushrooms are growing in a circle, dark powers must be at work” just reminds us how much you think you’re the only species who operates geometrically.
(Don’t get me started on “our child doesn’t respond within one standard deviation of societal norms, they must have been replaced with a changeling”. That one’s entirely yours; we’re not averse to weaponising human prejudice, but you’re just so good at it!)
But I digress!
My point is, you all imagine us limited to the old places. Obviously the Fair Folk couldn’t comprehend the digital age!
Endless walls of scrolling text that suck you ever deeper into despair and anger?
Algorithms that no-one can explain, shifting your lives onto new paths?
Forums where your gentle misconceptions of race and gender are twisted until your entire personality hangs on denying other humans their humanity?
Maybe it’s time you broke free of these new glamours.
